Lastly, if the word “auberge” brings to mind a rustic coaching inn, all bare stones and exposed beams, think again. This is a casual, beachside hangout – more like an old-fashioned American diner than a country inn. It’s open from noon to midnight, every day, for just about anything you can think of – drinks, pasta, seafood, shellfish, pizza, omelets, salads – on an enormous menu. There’s a daily special – paella, couscous, bourride a spicy fish stew similar to bouillabaise for between euro 8 and euro 13. Menus are reasonably priced, shellfish and crustaceans are specialties and you can sample a small serving of bouillabaise – a marmite du pêcheur – without selling your children. Forget about ambiance; this is the beach.
